One of the things that makes Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital so unique is our desire to make your pet part of our extended family. Our team is dedicated to providing the best care possible for your pets. Our facility is equipped with an in-house laboratory, digital x-rays (both for the body and dentistry) and ultrasound. This state-of-the-art equipment helps our doctors diagnose and treat most problems as quick as possible.

We also maintain excellent relationships with nearby specialists should your pet need referral for specialized care.
Services
Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital is fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association.
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is an international association of more than 42,000 veterinary care providers who treat companion animals.
Established in 1933, AAHA is well known among veterinarians and pet owners for its standards for hospitals and pet health care.
Approximately 3,000 veterinary hospitals voluntarily participate in the AAHA hospital evaluation program.
Consultants regularly visit these hospitals to ensure compliance with AAHA's standards for services and facilities.
At Shelter Island Veterinary Clinic, we offer a variety of services to care for your pet.
If you have any questions or would like more information on how we can care for your pet, please contact us today.
Our staff will get a chance to talk to you and see if you are having any trouble with your pet.
We will also go over diet, preventative medicine, and exercise to ensure that your pet is as healthy as possible.
Then, one of our veterinarians will do a complete physical examination on your pet.
It is always good to have a baseline in case your pet ever becomes ill.
To allow ample time for all patients and scheduled surgical procedures, we operate primarily by appointment.
Emergency cases shall always receive top priority, which is why occasional appointment delay is inevitable.
Please realize that we make a sincere attempt to see each client on time.
Even though we make every effort to make our patients feel comfortable during visits, they may be a little uneasy about new people, new surroundings and other pets.
This is one of the reasons we ask you to restrain your pet.
We offer free spays and neuters for stray, homeless cats through the Feral Cat Coalition to help control the population of these animals in our neighborhoods.
In addition, Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital provides low cost medical treatments for cats through The Rescue House.
Dr. Barbara Darnell has never turned away an animal in need.
Sometimes she refers to her own home as a "halfway house" for injured and abandoned animals.
Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital is commited to contributing to our community and animals in need.
We monitor our patients closely to keep them as safe as possible during procedures that require general anesthesia.
A veterinary technician will continually assess your pet's heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs to help prevent any anesthetic risk.
Please feel free to ask us about our patient monitoring protocol or any concerns you might have about your pet's procedure.
We'd be happy to discuss these matters in more detail.
For some procedures, your pet will need to be administered general anesthesia so that he or she will be unconscious and not feel pain.
