Mike was born in Hays, Kansas and grew up in Colorado, where he graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor degree in Ag Business. After graduating, Mike spent 7 years farming in Ellinwood, Kansas before deciding that wasn't the career for him. He found his passion to be caring for animals, so he completed pre-veterinary classes at Barton County Community College and entered the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988.
After graduating in 1992, Dr. Mike joined a mixed animal private practice in Augusta, Kansas, where he worked for two and a half years. He then moved back to Hays to work for two years before deciding to open his own practice. Dr. Mike opened Hillside Veterinary Clinic in August of 1996, and has been faithfully serving the Hays community since that time.
Together with his wife Laura, they have three children and one grandson, Kylie (husband Adam and grandson Miles, ) Zack, and Jake. He is a member of the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA), American Veterinary Medical Associate (AVMA), American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and licensed to practice in both Kansas and Colorado.

Services
Annual wellness exams are recommended for every pet under our care.
Even if your pets appear to be in perfect health, these check-ups can give us a baseline of their well-being.
If we haven't seen a pet in a few years, it can be difficult to tell what is different about them at a time of illness.
Our doctors are trained to spot things that even an owner might not notice and treat any issues before they become major concerns.
Unfortunately, pets age much faster than we do and can actually be considered seniors at seven years of age.

Vaccinations are key to your pet's health and well-being.

We take time to listen to your individual needs when it comes to developing a vaccination program specifically for your pet.
This ensures that your pet is receiving the most complete vaccination program for its specific lifestyle.

A pet's oral care is a vital part of its overall health.
The most common dental problems our pets face are tartar and gingivitis which can cause them discomfort as well as bad breath.
If left untreated for too long, dental issues can build into more severe issues relating to the heart and kidneys.
We recommend an oral examination of your pet annually with dental cleanings as necessary.
Dental cleanings done in our clinic require sedation and will consist of an ultrasonic scaling to remove tartar and plaque buildup as well as a polishing to protect teeth from further damage.
