Lameness is an abnormal gait of an animal that is the result of dysfunction of the locomotor system.
Embryo Transfer is the act of removing a 6-8 day embryo from the uterus of a donor mare and transferring that embryo into the uterus of a recipient mare.
This process requires that mares are cycled in parallel so that hormonal levels are consistent in both mares.
Donor mares can be as young as 3 years of age.
Our staff members are experienced in transferring embryos and have been doing so for over 15 years.
The benefits of embryo transfer are well known.
Valuable mares can produce multiple embryos in one season.
Oocytes are eggs that come from the follicles on the mare's ovaries.
The oocyte is released from the follicle on the ovary during ovulation and travels into the fallopian tube where it meets a sperm cell from the male and fertilization occurs.
The resulting embryo then travels to the uterus for implantation and development.
Harvesting oocytes is the process by which the oocytes are removed from the follicles and then in the lab are cultured and matured (maturation is roughly 12-30 hours, this is dependent upon the stage of the oocyte at the recovery).
Equine Cryogenics is the study of freezing and preserving embryos, semen and eggs at very low temperatures.
Veterinarians can utilize cryogenic techniques to successfully offer advanced breeding and preservation services to their clients.
Owners of Mares can gain access to a wider selection of Stallions due to the wide spread use of frozen semen.
Insemination using frozen semen should be handled carefully by the Veterinarian to insure that ovulation has occurred at the appropriate time.
Owners seeking to export Semen or Embryos to other countries must adhere to strict guidelines.
