We here at Superstition Animal Hospital believe that a trip here should be a relaxing experience for you and your pet. We want your pets to feel as if they are visiting friends and not the dreaded doctor. Through low stress handling and minimal restraint, your pet can be more relaxed and happy - this is our goal while still maintaining quality and affordable veterinary care for your pets.

If your pet tends to be very nervous in new situations or at the doctor, let us know when you schedule the appointment. We will take the time to help work through any anxiety your pet may experience. If you haven't been here before, we encourage you to bring your pet by to say hello and get a treat. If you have been here before, but would like to say hello and meet the new staff, please come by anytime with or without your pet.

We always love to meet new friends and provide fun happy visits with our patients and clients. Hello Everyone, It's been quite a year, thanks for all of your patience. That means we can come in with our pets and the lobby is open.

Dr. Heffelman is an Arizona native and graduated from Colorado State University's Veterinary Medicine program in 2004.
He returned to Arizona in 2009 where he was an associate veterinarian in other practices before fulfilling his dream of practice ownership in 2016.
He looks forward to continuing to provide excellent care to the clients and patients of Superstition Animal Hospital.
His interests lie in Internal medicine, pain management, soft tissue surgery and behavior.
He and his wife (also a veterinarian) have 3 dogs which he likes to describe as Large, Medium and Small - A Labrador, Corgi, and Chihuahua respectively.
Dental health is a very important aspect of our pets overall health.
Dental disease can affect appetite and quality of life for our furry friends as it can be extremely painful.
It is also a source of bacterial infection throughout the body.
As our pets dental disease gets worse we can see them become less playful because they don't want to put anything in their mouths.
Most people consider this just an aging process: however we have seen pets reportedly "becoming puppies/ kittens" again after dental procedures have alleviated this pain.
Allergies in animals are very common and can be very frustrating to treat.
In dogs and cats, allergies frequently cause skin disease rather than the "hay fever" symptoms humans get.
Symptoms to look for in your pet would include ear infections, rashes, and itching.
It is often difficult to determine if recurrent symptoms could be due to either a food allergy or an environmental allergy or sometimes even both.
Allergies in dogs can occur at any age, but most likely to occur between the ages of 2-7 years.
While vaccines are important, the most important part or your pet's healthcare is the yearly exam.
Our pets age faster than we do and small problems can become big problems quickly.
At the yearly exam we can identify any concerns and make plans to correct them if needed.
It is important to evaluate all body systems at least yearly for most pets and bi-annually for our geriatric patients.
This will help keep them healthy and around for a long time.
Heartworm disease can transferred from an infected mosquito to your pet.
Diagnostic testing may be an important component to your pets health for disease management and prevention, whether they are ill or even healthy.
The doctor can only identify so much with a physical exam.
Lab testing can tell us a lot of information that the doctor may not be able to identify without testing.
Some of our testing can be done in house with quick feedback, while others may be sent out.
Either way, once we receive the results of the test, the doctor may then give diagnosis and treatment plans to help put your furry friend on the right path to recovery.
