Services
Growing up on his grandfather's cattle ranch in Wyoming, Evan Dowdy learned common sense and the basics of animal medicine.
After earning his DVM from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine, he returned to work on the ranch, where he was the only veterinarian within 40 miles.
Devoting his career as a full-time veterinarian, he gathered even more experience as a full-time generalist and part-time emergency vet for three years in Pennsylvania.
In 1991, Dr. Dowdy joined Dr. Kiefer at Kiefer Veterinary Clinic, now Horizon Veterinary Clinic, a respected animal hospital established in 1946, where he continues a tradition of superior care for pets.
We pride ourselves on being an AAHA Accredited Practice!
The American Animal Hospital Association, or AAHA, is a national organization that provides a higher standard of care for veterinarians to align themselves with.
Only approximately 12% of veterniary hospitals in the nation have achieved this status.
This program is completely voluntary to participate in, and requires that the hospital meet or exceed over 900 standards of care.
These standards are constantly being reviewed and updated to align with the most current research and standards of care for our patients.
Allergies are a common and often frustrating problem for pets and pet owners alike.
This handout is designed to provide owners with more information about the two main types of allergies in pets: environmental allergies and food allergies.
An allergy is a state of hypersensitivity in which exposure to a harmless substance known as an allergen stimulates the body's immune system to "overreact."
People with allergies usually have "hay fever" (itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, etc.) or asthma.
While dogs can sometimes have these respiratory symptoms, more commonly they experience allergies in the form of itchy skin.
The vestibular system is the part of the middle ear that is responsible for maintaining balance and telling our brain where the body is positioned.
Vestibular system disorders cause a severe sense of "vertigo" and can cause signs such as loss of coordination, falling over, trouble standing, head tilt, and rapid side-to-side eye movements (called nystagmus).
Middle ear infections, tumors, polyps, and head trauma are a few of the conditions that can cause these signs.
However, the most common cause of these signs in middle aged to older dogs is Idiopathic Vestibular Disease (also known as Old Dog Vestibular Syndrome).
Mast cells are a normal part of the immune system and are designed to participate in the destruction of parasites.
They are bound within tissues that 'interact' with the external world, such as the skin, respiratory system, or intestinal tract.
They do not circulate throughout the body.
The mast cell contains granules of inflammatory biochemicals meant for use against invading parasites.
When signals from the immune system indicate that a parasite is near, the mast cell degranulates, releasing its toxic biochemicals.
