Make sure everyone who intends to be present understands and will cooperate with these requirements. We will be incorporating some changes to our precautions based on BOTH the requirements of our governing bodies as well as the extraordinarily unique conditions of a house call euthanasia service. It is important to keep in mind, we are going to strangers homes all day every day.

We also have vulnerable family members at home. We want to continue to help as many pets and families as we can, and that's why these precautions are required. These modifications are necessary in order to protect ourselves, the public, and you. These measures are in effect regardless of your vaccination status - please don't request exceptions. The experience will still allow for a peaceful passing for your pet with familiar surroundings and scents.

The whole process will still be at the hands of a caring veterinarian who only wants the best we can offer during these times. After a full year of performing visits outdoors - for dogs and cats - through all sorts of weather - we know it works well and we continue to stay outdoors or in a ventilated space such as a garage.
Services
Each pet has a family who loves it and these people need a supportive and caring doctor to see to it that their pet, and they, are treated with dignity, respect and the utmost compassion.
The attention I've provided my own pets when they were euthanized at home is the same level of care I strive to provide all pets.
All of my pets came to me in need.
My two cats (Muffy and Puss Puss) were surrendered by their elderly owner who loved them, but could no longer keep them.
My dog, Gavin (pictured at left), was seized when his owner was arrested (and subsequently convicted) for animal cruelty.
As a veterinarian focusing on end-of-life care, I am often asked, "How do you do this?"
Quite simply, the answer is because I care and I am proud to be able to help animals by relieving suffering and comforting their families.
I've had to go through this myself for my own pets.
I've also seen what pets and people go through in the hospital setting and what it takes to bring in a sick and frightened pet.
I get it.
As if the grief wasn't enough, I've seen in the owners' eyes the fear, the worry, and the wish for privacy and to not be rushed.
Thank you for all you have done for our beloved companions and for us.
It has been a really hard couple of years having so many elderly pets at once.
Knowing that there is a kind and compassionate person who can assist when it is time to make these agonizing decisions makes a huge difference.
You are a very special person and the world is blessed to have you in it.
Please know that there is no one else that I would trust as much as you to make it as peaceful as possible.
You entered our lives at a moment of crisis, but fit in like a family member.
Understanding a pet's quality of life is complicated and serious.
You, as the person who knows your pet best, will understand better your pet and your situation than anyone.
However, quality of life is what we think about every day.
The veterinarian of In the Comfort of Home will be able to discuss your pet's status with you.
Please also print and consult the very helpful HuMANE CARE quality of life assessment tool and review it periodically.
This tool lists many aspects that are important to a pet's quality of life that many people may not otherwise consider.
You may not be aware of it, but you are likely already grieving.
It is very common to be undergoing grief while your pet is still alive, but you are now expecting their loss soon.
This is a natural process called Anticipatory Grief.
This intense time can cause tremendous amounts of anxiety and worry for the pet, how and when the end will happen.
This is real and difficult to endure.
But you are not alone in feeling this.
Planning the 'where' and the 'when', though difficult, can also help relieve some of that anxiety and allow you to focus on your bond with your pet.
