That all changed when her father brought home Velvet, a German shorthaired pointer puppy who quickly stole her heart.
Dr. S assisted her dad in training Velvet to become a phenomenal bird dog and field trial champion and later helped deliver and raise a litter of Velvet's puppies.
Discovering the profound connection she felt with these dogs, Dr. S nurtured her passion for animal behavior and biology in high school and college.
