Dr. Shelley earned her Ph. D. in pharmacology from University of Pennsylvania in 1996. She earned her DVM degree from Ohio State University in 2001. She worked as an equine vet at the prestigious Hagyard-Davidson-McGee in Lexington, KY until 2004. Realizing her vocation in life is to bring quality and accesible veterinary care to rural areas, she moved to the Great Plains of North Dakota and also began to work internationally serving the underserved.

While serving in the international animal welfare community, she realized a large gap in the long-view for sustainability for animal welfare as well as the interconnectedness between animal welfare, human health and productive agriculture. Based on this need, she founded SVI in 2014. Denise Sandvick began her path to living a purposeful life growing up in Chicago.

Her travels took her as single parent to Arizona where she supported herself and family while studying business management and working in a legal office. After 10 years on that path she started her career in interior design for a large residential builder in Arizona and pursued this passion for over 12 years.

Our extensive teaching program of "Teaching the Teachers" involves one-on-one intensive mentorship in all aspects of veterinary medicine.
We start from a building a strong foundation of a good systematic physical exam, understanding physiology, and pathophysiology.
Here we have one of our Board Members, Dr. Raul Casas, instructing two young Nicaraguan Veterinarians on the proper pre-surgical physical exam.
Every successful businessman knows the importance of having the right tools for the job.
It's no different for veterinarians.
In many impoverished areas, the people and the animals are severely malnourished.
This is particularly problematic for growing children and pregnant women.
The nutritional status of the animals will never be higher than the nutritional status of their humans.
Improving human nutrition and food security will improve the local animals nutrition and well-being.
Animal source foods (eggs, liver, meat, milk, cheese) provide high quality complete protein, essential fatty acids, Vitamin B-12, iron, zinc, and many other micronutrients/vitamin in the most bioavailable form for human digestion.
To dovetail with ecosystem health, SVI promotes Regenerative Farming Practices to increase food yields on available land and increase local food independence.
We develop hearty crops and healthy animals through permaculture design concepts to improve the soil while simultaneously improving agricultural yields and increasing available food sources.
Of course, animals are a key component to a healthy regenerative farm.
The beginnings of creating our Permaculture farm.
Using the abundant volcanic rocks available, swails were built to help with water retention and decrease soil erosion during the heavy rainy season.
Many impoverished families in rural areas are landless with significant food insecurity and have vulnerable or non-existent livelihoods.
This often leads young adults to leave their communities and families to emigrate to other countries in search of jobs.
The lack of local services in turn results in more hardships for daily living.
Teaching young adults vocational skills within a community increases potential to alternative incomes while adding much needed local services which have economic value as well as community value.
